Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Margins pinnatifid or toothed. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary verticillasters, each flower +/- bracteolate. Calyx actinomorphic, cylindrical or campanulate, 5–nerved, 5-toothed, the teeth equal or subequal, splitting longitudinally, usually persistent or sometimes only ventral 1/2 persistent. Corolla zygomorphic, bilabiate, white, pink, or purple, upper lip hooded, entire or 2-lobed, lower lip obcordate to broadly obovate, ± with small lateral lobes; nectary disk often present at base of ovary, annular or developed on anterior side only. Stamens 4, in 2 pairs, lower pair longer, ascending the lower corolla lip; anther sacs divaricate; anthers dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate, placentation basal-axile; ovules 1 per ovary lobe; style 1; stigmas 2.

Fruit: Nutlets 1-seeded; trigonous; apex truncate. Seeds with endosperm absent or scanty and oily.
